CHAPTER ELEVEN
Nathan stumbled hard, barely catching his balance before he fell. He glanced up, seeing that while his mind had been occupied as he walked, his legs had carried him to a church near his and Calvin’s home. He spotted a bench off to the side of the sidewalk in front of the church and staggered toward it, feeling it was taking the last of his strength to reach it. He collapsed heavily on it, panting for his breath. After a moment, he shifted into a more comfortable position. Twenty-six years old and he felt like he was closer to one hundred and one. He’d only meant to go for a short walk to help sort through the thoughts that’d been haunting him, but he went further than he intended.
The first drops of rain pattered down on the bench, his head, his legs. He tipped his head back toward the sky. “When it rains, it really does pour.”
He sighed and remained sitting. He didn’t have it in him to make the walk back home right now. He could go into the church until the rain stopped, but for a reason he couldn’t quite understand, a feeling of discomfort rose in him at the thought. Maybe he felt he didn’t belong there anymore. He’d seen his brother summon a dark being, and all he did was earn a promise from Calvin to not do it again. Yes, he’d tried to fight the demon, but the beast was right; he didn’t have the strength.
He couldn’t protect Calvin any longer from anything. He certainly couldn’t protect Calvin from himself. The things his brother did, he didn’t understand them. The stones and crystals, the candles and incense, that journal Calvin called his Book of Shadows where he wrote down strange things…spells, he guessed. It had seemed harmless enough at first. He thought Calvin was only trying to find himself, exploring different things. He hadn’t expected the witchcraft to last. But it had, and Calvin was clinging stubbornly to it.
He understood well there were forces in existence that many people didn’t know about, or didn’t want to know about. Even the Church was quiet on the matters publicly, but that didn’t stop them from having priests trained to handle exorcisms and banishments. He received cursory knowledge of it in seminary and had taken it upon himself to study it more. Had his body not begun to fail him, he would’ve pursued it to a greater extent.
Nathan closed his eyes. A few cold drops of rain landed on his face. When their father had passed, he might’ve only been sixteen, but he’d stepped up to be the man in the household, trying to do the duties his father had done and help their mother the best he could. He worked part-time after school, using what he earned to help pay for groceries and the home expenses. While he’d always tried to be a role model for Calvin, with their father’s death, he doubled his efforts.
